Leksdalsvatnet roundtrip – a cycling experience through nature and history
Join us for a scenic and varied cycling tour around Lake Leksdalsvatnet, nestled in the heart of Innherred, Trøndelag. This approximately 75 km circular route takes you through gently rolling farmland, vibrant rural communities, and historic landmarks such as Stiklestad, the Skeifeltet and Hallemsmarka burial grounds, and the charming Bjørka farm shop.
Whether you’re an experienced cyclist looking for a rewarding day trip, or prefer to take it slow over several days in shorter stages, this route offers a memorable experience for every pace.

Trip description
You can start the tour either from Steinkjer town centre (at the Innherred Tourist Office) or from Stiklestad National Cultural Centre in Verdal.
The route takes you through Sørlia and Bruem, where you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the landscape – a short climb, but well worth it for the scenery! You’ll then cycle on to Bjørka where you can make a stop at their farm shop. Bjørka feature their own farm produced honey which they have also use in their own handmade chocolate. In addition to other locally produced food and handicrafts.
A litte further on from Bjørka you pass the Skei burial site, one of North-Trøndelag’s largest burial grounds, dating back to around 800 AD.
The journey continues to Lysheim and further south towards Stiklestad. If you prefer a shorter ride, you can cut across the northern tip of Lake Leksdalsvatnet and head towards Henning (see map).
At the southern end of the lake you can visit Hallemsmarka burial grounds, another of North-Trøndelags largest burial sites with around 80 burial mounds dating from ealy and late Iron age. The site features several massive mounds, including one that is 40 metres in diameter and 6 metres high. These impressive structures suggest the area was home to powerful and wealthy individuals, likely local chieftains.
it’s well worth taking a detour to the Stiklestad National Cultural Centre for lunch, a guided tour, or simply a relaxing break before continuing north along the eastern side of the lake.
If you are really interested in history, we receommend a visit to Hegstadmarka burial mounds, just east of Stikelstad National Cultural Centre – home of one of Norways most imprssive concentration of large Iron Age burial mounds.
From Stiklestad return towards Steinkjer along the eastern side of Lake Leksdalsvatnet.
Just south of Vegmo, at Sæli, turn off the county road and follow the road towards Henning Church. This road passes through a farmyard with horses, so please exercise caution – it’s advisable to dismount and walk your bike through.
Continue to Skarpnes, then on to Røli, where you can take a detour to the Cultural farm Bjerkem. You can visit the Bunadburet which showcases a remarkable collection fo reconstructed folk costumes (bunads) based on clothing traditions
of Nord-Trønelag from 1750 – 1840. Bunadburet also offers insights into local farm and textile history, making it more than just a costume exhibition – it’s a living tribute to regional identity and craftsmanship. (Contact Berit Bjerkem to arrange for a visit).
At the farm you can also visit the gourmet restaurant Experience where you can enjoy a 7 – 16 course taster menu set in the restored barn at the farm and run by Michelin trained chef Kim Tore Sjøbakk.
From Røli bike along to Trana via the road near Bruem (look for the farm with the distinctive “tower”). Take the side road to the left where the main road curves to the right, and follow it to Tranamarka/Trana. From there, descend Tranabakken straight down into the town centre.

Steinkjer:
Begin your journey at the Innherred Tourist Office in Hamnegata 20 – conveniently located along the E6 highway. Here, you can pick up trail maps, get expert advice, and even rent a bike if needed.
Stiklestad:
Start your adventure at the Stiklestad National Cultural Centre – just follow the signs from the E6 in Verdal town centre.
Whether you choose Steinkjer or Stiklestad as your starting point, you’re in for an unforgettable ride through history and stunning landscapes!
Tour Tips
- Stay fueled – Bring plenty of water and some snacks. There are plenty of scenic spots to stop for a break!
- Shorten the route – If you’re short on time, you can easily cut the ride shorter—for example, via Henning for a half-day adventure.
- Respect the locals – Be mindful when passing through farmyards and areas with animals—keep a friendly distance and follow any posted guidelines.
- Enjoy the ride, soak in the views, and pedal safely!
