Summer at Egge Museum:

The open-air museum invites you to enjoy a pleasant time in a historical environment. Here you step into a 19th-century farmstead with many buildings, each serving its own purpose. Children can meet farm animals such as sheep, pigs and chickens. Throughout the summer there are various family activities in the farmyard, along with occasional larger events.

In the visitor building, you can relax in the cosy café – perfect when the rain is pouring down. We also offer reading materials and games, as well as a dedicated play corner for children. The visitor building is well adapted for wheelchair users and prams.

Animals at the museum

Egge Museum is home to many animals, including Old Norse short-tailed sheep (a primitive breed), chickens, pigs and rabbits. The sheep graze outdoors all year round. The chickens live here year-round, and chicks are hatched in spring. From June to September, we also have two free-roaming pigs as well as rabbits.

Every day during the summer season (except Mondays), you can join the daily feeding round for some of the animals. This takes place at 12:00 noon.

In summer, Shetland ponies also graze in the museum area, although they are most often found at Eggevammen. The animals graze on burial mound areas and elsewhere to help keep the vegetation under control.

Exhibitions

In the exhibition “Steinkjer – Portraits of a Town”, you can explore a street from old Steinkjer, as it may have looked during the interwar period. The nostalgic atmosphere is strong! There is even a small traditional general store where children can play.

“TRACTOR” is an exhibition for all tractor enthusiasts, young and old. Here you can wander among tractors of various models and eras, while learning about their role and development in agriculture. There is also a spacious play area with pedal tractors, a henhouse and other fun features. Be warned – your four-year-old may not want to leave!

Burial mounds

Eggevammen has a long and fascinating history. Burial mounds line both sides of the road like pearls on a string. Up to 50 mounds were created here between around the year 0 and approximately 1000 AD, many of which remain clearly visible today. Remarkable discoveries have been made here, including a unique silver-decorated Viking sword. The sword is now displayed in the archaeological exhibition at HEIM in Steinkjer Culture Centre.

If you follow Eggevammen, you will reach the farmyard of Egge Farm – a chieftain’s seat with a thousand-year history. Some of the most powerful Viking chieftains lived here, including Trond Haka, Olve of Egge and Kalv Arnesson, all known from the Norse sagas. The latter was among those who rallied the farmers to fight against Olaf Haraldsson at the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030.

At Eggetunet, you will find the remains of Egge Farm – a large estate with centuries of settlement history. Today, only the barn and storehouse remain, along with a grand farmhouse garden offering fine views of the town. From here, you can also walk the Sigrid Trail, named after the Viking woman Sigrid, who, according to the sagas, lived here as mistress of the house. Along the trail you will find more burial mounds, and it leads down to the open-air museum.

Where is Egge Museum located?

Egge Museum is a five-minute drive from the centre of Steinkjer and is also within walking and cycling distance.

The museum is open Tuesday–Sunday, 11:00–15:00, from 21 June to 9 August.
