The world’s largest lawn chair at Oftenåsen in Steinkjer

The world’s largest garden chair towers above Steinkjer from the top of Oftenåsen, offering panoramic views over the town, the fjord, Ogndalen and south towards Lake Leksdalsvatnet, with Mount Hermannssnasa rising in the background.

Oftenåsen is located about four kilometres southeast of the town centre and is both the city’s local mountain and the highest point in Steinkjer, at 336 metres above sea level. The area is a popular destination with an extensive network of walking trails, providing great outdoor experiences all year round.

The chair was built in 2013 as a tribute to two local pioneers for their work in improving the trails in the area. Their names are carved into the back of the chair. It stands 4.75 metres tall and weighs 2.5 tonnes.

Peilehytta

Peilehytta is open every Sunday from 11:00 to 15:00 throughout the year (except on public holidays). Here you can buy coffee, waffles, ice cream and drinks.

The cabin is also open during the summer:

Barbecuing

If you wish to barbecue, you will need to bring your own charcoal and firelighter. There are two barbecues and a fire pit available at Peilehytta. Visitors are strongly encouraged not to use disposable barbecues.

Walking trails with 5 starting points

There are five different starting points for the trails leading up to Oftenåsen, all with free parking. A variety of routes allow you to choose both the length and difficulty of your walk. Along the way, there are rest areas where you can take your time and enjoy the trip.

Among the most well-known routes is the Troll Trail (2.3 km one way), which is especially popular with families thanks to the carved troll figures along the path. Sognleia is another, slightly longer route to the top (5.1 km one way).

Oftenåsen staircase

Another highlight is the Oftenåsen staircase, a fitness stairway that starts at the Troll Trail near the junction with “Siste Utvei” and leads all the way to the top by Peilehytta and the large chair.
The climb covers 190 metres in elevation and includes 327 steps.

From the top, you can also take a short walk to the Tower (Tårnet), where you will find a shelter and an even better viewpoint.

At the top of the staircase, there is also a large red heart sculpture with a golden arrow. It is positioned so that when you stand at the back of the platform, the town of Steinkjer is perfectly framed inside the heart – a very popular photo spot.
