Sakshaug Old Church
Sakshaug Old Church – a medieval monument with a view!
This impressive stone church from the 12th century stands proudly overlooking Inderøy, the Trondheimfjorden and the surrounding cultural landscape. It was likely consecrated in 1184 by Archbishop Øystein Erlendsson and served as the county church for Eynafylket – a true status symbol of its time.
Built in Romanesque style with Gothic features added during a 13th-century rebuild, the nave boasts walls 1.5 metres thick, and mason’s marks reveal that craftsmen from Nidaros Cathedral took part in its construction. The portals are richly decorated with masks, faces and ornaments, and the church contains one of the oldest Gothic arches in the Nordic region. Materials include local limestone, marble and soapstone.
From ruin to restored church
After the new Sakshaug Church was built in 1871, the old one stood as a ruin. The Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments restored it in stages, and it was reconsecrated in 1958. Today, it hosts weddings, concerts and guided tours.
Open every Sunday during the summer season (June – August)
Guided tours available year-round by prior arrangement.
Sakshaug Old Church – history, architecture and panoramic views at the heart of Inderøy.
Hustad Church
Hustad Church – a medieval gem in Sandvollan!
This small yet magnificent stone church was built around 1150–1160 as a Romanesque long church with chancel, nave and west tower. It was likely constructed as a private church for the chieftain at Hustad, based at the Vestre Hustad farm.
Hustad Church is one of Norway’s best-preserved medieval churches, with interior and exterior details reflecting the Middle Ages as well as the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries. Surrounding the churchyard stands the “Kjerkplanken” – a log-built fence from the 1600s, the only one of its kind preserved in Trøndelag. The west portal is richly decorated with Romanesque ornaments, zigzag patterns and dragon motifs, and the stone altar is the only surviving piece from the medieval interior. The pulpit and chancel screen from the 1600s remain intact.
The church was decommissioned as a parish church in 1887 and handed over to the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments, which has kept it unrestored – a rare witness to history.
Open every Sunday during the summer season (June-August).
Guided tours for groups available year-round by prior arrangement.
